  I tried d/l it again. The first two times it again copied a single-page, 64k version, but thereafter it copied the full file perfectly. Go figure!

  Each time I initiated the copy by right-clicking on the link and selecting 'Save target as..'

  At any rate, if you are having problems, others likely are having even more probs. I will look at either splitting the file or making it a PDF instead.

  I don't know if it's necessary to bother if nobody else has had a problem. It might have been some quirk in my setup. (It was a download problem rather than a viewing problem. I use Maxthon, which is an IE-wrap-around, for maximum IE-compatibility: maybe it was to blame...)

  Personally, I prefer tifs. Anyway, aren't they supposed to be far more efficient than pdfs?

  Were you able to make out sifficient detail to see if the snake had legs?

  When I tried enlarging the picture, it became too blurred.

  You referred to the Gravitation and Electric Energy page on your web site. I had a look at it and then tried downloading the tif scan of the pages.

  Instead of download 677k, the file was only 71k and consisted of only the Awake! cover page, without any of the article pages.

  this information is taken from thesis by peter strawhan, 1984, re jws in australia in ww2.

  rees was head of jws in australia, who were banned 1941-43.

  jws contributed 10,000 to war bonds from cash accumulated during ban, reported to knorr july 1943. rees: ?of course the fact that we took out the bonds has not been publicized, but we have seen to it that the government officials such as security, army, manpower, etc, know of it.

  Is there an online reference for this?

  Rees was head of JWs in Australia

  Is this Phil Rees?

  Strawhan got his information from gov files (AA (SA) AP538/1, SA29378)

  Are these online? If not, are you planning on getting a copy of these? If so, would you be able to scan and post them?

  So if you search WT CD for "snakes" and "legs" this doesn't come up?

  Though, to be fair to WT (not that they deserve it), if you search for 'serpent' and 'legs,' it does come up...

  As an interesting aside, in the NWT, Genesis 3:1 says:

  Now the serpent proved to be the most cautious of all the wild beasts of the field that Jehovah God had made.

  The Hebrew for serpent is nachash and the definition also includes snake. Although the traditional view is that it was a snake in the tree that spoke to Eve, does anyone know whether nachash might have allowed for another animal, like some kind of lizard, of which some types are also known as serpents and dragons?

  I don't suppose anyone has a scan of "New Heavens and a New Earth" (1953) page 81 which has an illustration of Eve and a snake with legs?...

  There is an even more dramatic illustration on page 157 of the book "Riches" showing Adam gesturing to a serpent with legs, which apparently also looked like a lizard. And behind Adam and Eve is a contemplative, bat-winged Lucifer standing there in his bare hoofs. Anyone have a scan?

  Having said all this, I still don't know of any legless lizards.

  If the CO's pressuring the elders, might it be useful to include him in the threatened lawsuit?

  Similar to rebel8, I've also wondered what is the situation regarding human rights.

  However, rather than filing a complaint under Article 12, I wondered about Article 18:

  *** g98 11/22 pp. 9-10 Human Rights and Wrongs Today ***

  Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion. ?Article 18. [of the UDHR]

  Of course, WT has often sought to rely on these rights when various governments have objected to WT activities in their countries, and have claimed the right to be registered and to proselytise in their exercise of their "freedom of religion."

  What they have conveniently forgotten, however, is that these rights work both ways: the 'freedom to change your religion or belief' applies not only to those to whom JWs preach, but also to those of their members wishing to leave the Jehovah's Witness religion .

  I'd be interested whether such an approach might work...

  You can be shunned without being disfellowshipped.

  Blondie's spot on. This is perhaps what has happened to CLV. The Pay Attention book, page 100 says

  If the sinful conduct is known only to believing family members and no congregation action is taken because of the factors outlined above, believing relatives will likely determine to curtail family association severely, viewing the relative as bad association. (1 Cor. 15 :33)

  The elder body is required to try and contact you by phone and if you can't be reached that way, by registered letter 3 times before they go ahead and DF a person.

  This is, I think, slightly less clear. The instructions are, no doubt deliberately, vague and imprecise. As an aside, it's the judicial committee rather than the elder body as a whole that deals with the matter (a fine distinction, I know, especially in small congregations with few elders).

  The Pay Attention book, page 110 says:

  Do not send an individual any kind of correspondence that directly accuses him of specific wrongdoing.

  It is best for two elders to speak with the individual and invite him to meet with the judicial committee .

  Suitable arrangements should be made as to the time and place of the hearing.

  State what the person's course of action is supposed to have been.

  If it is necessary to send a written invitation, you should

  simply state what the individual's course is alleged to have been, the time and place of the hearing, and how the person can contact the chairman if the arrangements are inconvenient for him.

  However, the Pay Attention book, page 110 says:

  If the accused repeatedly fails to come to the hearing, the committee will proceed with the hearing but will not make a decision until evidence and any testimony by witnesses are considered.

  The committee should have at least made "repeaded" attempts to contact the accused.

  Remembering, of course, the number of times that committees are either unaware of, or choose to totally ignore, such instructions, it is still quite possible that someone could have been disfellowshipped without having been notified.

  Of course, the judicial committee can instead decide that, by one's actions, one has disassociated oneself. According to the Pay Attention book, page 102:

  Those who disassociate themselves should be viewed and treated the same as disfellowshipped persons. (w85 7/15 pp. 30-1)

  The judicial committee is still supposed to have two witnesses to these actions. However, they can decide a person has disassociated himself and announce it to the congregation without meeting with the alleged offender.
